Hammond Eastside Magnet School receives glowing International Baccalaureate during re-evaluation
Hammond Eastside Magnet School received a glowing report from the International Baccalaureate (IB) during a re-evaluation visit earlier this school year. HEM became an authorized IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) school for grades Pre-kindergarten- 5th grade in July of 2014. The faculty was commended for their commitment to the Programme, for promoting student action both at school and at home, planning lessons which integrate subjects, and regularly reflecting on their practices.
“I am pleased with the results of the report regarding the PYP re-evaluation for HEM. The students, teachers, staff, parents, and local community members played a major part in our success. I am looking forward to continued growth with the Programme in the years to come” said Michael Kyles Jr., principal of Hammond Eastiside Magnet School.
What sets an IB education apart is the Learner Profile Attributes and the Approaches to Learning. Through inquiry based learning, students are not only taught the subject matter, but are encouraged to become thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, knowledgeable, caring, balanced, risk-takers, inquires, and reflective. They are encouraged to ask questions about the world around them as the teachers help them to make connections. Students use the Learner Profile Attributes and Approaches to Learning Skills as they navigate through the learning process.
HEM is unique to IB in that the school offers the Primary Years Programme to such a large number of students within one school. All levels of the IB continuum can be found in Hammond. Hammond Eastside offers the Primary Years Program, Pre-kindergaten-5th grade and the Middle Years Programme, 6th-8th grades. Hammond High Magnet School offers both the Career-Related Programme and the Diploma Programme. Southeastern Louisiana University also recently began offering the IB Educator Certificate Program.
